Manchester United are one of the most successful and recognisable teams in football history. In this article we will look back at five of the best retro jerseys the Red Devils have worn throughout their history.
Home shirt 2007-09
This jersey is a fan favourite for many reasons. Not only is it a great jersey but it is connected to many fond memories for United fans.
The Red Devils won two league titles while wearing this strip as well as beating Chelsea on penalties to clinch the UEFA Champions League trophy for the third time in the club’s history.
Fans will reminisce of Ronaldo, Rooney, Scholes and Ferdinand all sporting this kit at Old Trafford, memories that will bring a smile to all fans of the club.
Away shirt 1990-92
This snazzy away jersey is fondly remembered by Red Devil supporters. The shirt was worn during the early years of Sir Alex Ferguson’s rise at the club.
During the years this strip was worn, United famously won the European Cup Winners Cup against Barcelona in 1991 as well as the League Cup in 1992.
United’s away kit last season took great inspiration from the design of this shirt, with its unique pattern really helping it stand out from the crowd.
Third shirt 1992-94
The Manchester United third kit between 1992-94 is arguably one of the most iconic shirts the club has ever had. This kit was made to pay tribute to the club’s roots from when they were known as Newton Heath.
The green and gold colours are instantly recognisable to any fan from the 90’s. United had great success in the kit, winning back-to-back league titles with the likes of Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Eric Cantona inspiring the Old Trafford crowd.
European Cup Final shirt 1968
This shirt, despite being blue, is one that holds great sentimental value to Manchester United fans. Their blue away strip is what the club wore when they won their first ever European Cup in 1968, beating Benfica 4-1 after extra-time.
Led by Manager Sir Matt Busby, United had the likes of SIr Bobby Charlton, George Best and a young Brian Kidd in their ranks. Winning the trophy was an incredible achievement considering it was just 10 years after the Munich Air Disaster tragedy which saw many United players pass away.
Tickets for the 1968 final at Wembley cost around £2 but were being sold for £20 (around £1,850 in modern times).
Although finding a shirt from 1968 is tough, there are plenty of high quality replicas available.
Home European shirt 1997-00
When it comes to Manchester United shirts, it doesn’t get any bigger than this. Their European home shirt from their iconic treble winning season is a must have for Red Devil fans.
The custom home badge, the Champions league patching and the memorable Sharp sponsor, this shirt has it all.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side wore this jersey when they famously scored two late goals to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League final in Barcelona.
