For those that click onto the UK Soccer Shop blog regularly, you’ll know that this author is an Ipswich Town fan. For those that are fans of the Championship may know that the Tractor Boys kicked off their 2018/19 season on the Saturday just passed. Their first game was against Blackburn Rovers and despite Ipswich Town scoring first, it looked like it would be a win for the Riverside Rovers. During injury time, as nervous fans watched on, Tayo Edun scored and Portman Road erupted. The game was a nail-biter but if fans could take their eyes off the ball for just one moment, they will have seen Blackburn Rovers’ 2018/19 away kit.
The jersey is bright and bold. It also contains features which reflect fans’ love for the club. Umbro have decided on a yellow colouring for the away kit. Its bright shading, rather than dulled or neutral means that it’s incredibly eye-catching and fans won’t have too much trouble trying to spot it on the pitch.
Dominating the front of the jersey is the club’s latest sponsor – 10Bet. Luckily the main sponsor’s colouring is black so it does fit in with the dark blue of the kit top’s overall design. When we showed you the club’s home kit, we posed the question whether the sponsor actually ruins the aesthetics of the kit? Upon reflection, we think it contrasts nicely with the lightness of the blue and white.
Back to the away kit and Umbro’s trademark tapering features once again around the bottom of each of the sleeves. The neckline is a slick, no-nonsense one with a dark blue strip running down each side.
On the nape of the kit top is our favourite feature. Within white and navy boxes is the word “Rovers”. It’s a simple touch but featuring something on the nape always feels like finding a hidden Easter egg.
Some eager-eyed fans have spotted the resemblance between this away kit and the jersey worn in 1992 when the club was chasing promotion to the top tier of English football. Could history repeat itself this season?
