Coventry City. It’s situated just East of Birmingham – the capital of the midlands. The city of Coventry is famous for it’s awe-inspiring cathedral, the riveting transport museum (semi-pun intended), and their football team. The club play at the Ricoh arena and are steered by Mark Robins, the helmsman of Coventry City. While the club have bounced around the leagues over the past few years, their 2017/18 campaign lead to promotion from League two and into League One. After their troubled years, perhaps this is the stability they need and can now build towards at least the Championship.
To get fans excited for the 2018/19 season, Coventry have teamed up with Nike to create a home kit that is simple, effective, and well-designed. We at UK Soccer Shop really like this kit. What do you think?
The kit colouring is simple – Sky blue. A colour that seems to have worked for Manchester City over the years and has been present in the club’s history since 1962. This author just found out that shorts used to be called “knickers” in the very early days of football (pre 19th century).
On the front of the jersey we see a number of ambiguous, dynamic shapes that give some definition to the kit. Nike have opted to make the sleeves the same colour but they are separated by a physical band across the top of the chest and bottom of the shoulders.
Coventry City’s crest, Nike’s iconic Swoosh, and their two sponsors: XL Motors and MID Repro stand out very well against the sky blue background.
The bottom of the sleeves are tapered with the same colour, but in a material with more elastic. This allows full freedom of movement. Together with the breathable technology, the kit allows to stay cool even under the most intense pressure (like chasing down promotion).
While all eyes seem to be on this year’s World Cup, football fans will be excited to see if Coventry City can pull off a double promotion and be back competing with the titans of Ipswich Town again in a couple of years time.
