Manchester United 1982 Kit Reissue

In this day and age, football kits come with all manner of trim, accents and more than a few squiggles. Thirty years ago, there were more than a few occasions when they did the same but sometimes, just sometimes, they got it absolutely right.

Adidas Originals is to reissue one such kit – the Manchester United 1982/84 home kit.

This was before the Premier League had arrived and United were still seeking their first league title since 1967.

Now that’s a proper football kit!

The shirt is a footballing classic: plain red front with subtle tonal pinstripes. Adidas’ Three Stripes – in white – run across the shoulder and down the arms to white, red and black cuffs.

The v-neck collar is also white with a thin red band and a thicker black band on the inside.

On the chest, the old United club crest sits opposite the Adidas Trefoil which was the logo of the time. Sponsor in that era was Sharp, the Japanese electronics conglomerate.

United won the FA Cup in this time, beating Brighton and Hove Albion in a replay after the final was drawn 2 – 2 at Wembley. Gordon Smith may have changed history had he scored what would have been the winning goal for the Seagulls. He missed and United cruised to a 4 – 0 win the following week.
