It was a secret leaked so badly that you might believe MI5 were in charge of the project. Everton’s 2016/17 home kit was released yesterday amid a little fanfare and to a warm reception. That may have changed this morning after last night’s 3 – 0 drubbing at the hands of relegation threatened, Sunderland.

The leaked photo of Ross Barkley was suspected of being a cleverly photoshopped image but turned out to be from the official set, marking the thirtieth anniversary of the club’s last league title.
Either way, the home shirt from Umbro is a faithful rendition from Harry Catterick’s School of Science days of the late 1960s / early 1970s. The simplicity of the shirt is its strength, with the yellow a discreet influence on the trim.
Completed with white shorts and socks, interrupted only by the blue and yellow branding midway up the shin, the kit is sure to be popular with supporters.
The use of the old bench seating as a prop is influenced by the decision to put the geographical co-ordinates of Goodison Park as a motif in the collar. With a top ten finish now out of reach, perhaps the club has decided on a novel way of attracting ‘lost’ fans back every fortnight.
