Sitting comfortably in mid-table, Hamburger SV today released their new 2016-17 home kit. Having been embroiled in the relegation play-offs for the last two seasons, it’s no wonder that Der Dino players were full of smiles knowing that their Bundesliga future is all but secure for another season.

Adidas have stayed faithful to the traditional colours of white shirt, red shirt and blue socks which first became familiar to English fans when Kevin Keegan left Liverpool for the port city in 1977 for a then-record fee of £500k.

Those heady days of European success seem a long way off but the simple design of the white top rekindles those memories. With all trim and logos bar the club badge in red, the home shirt stands out among its contemporaries for the startling simplicity of the colour scheme.

With the gold star above the badge signalling their status as one of Germany’s more successful club, the blue background of the badge is a nod toward the city’s maritime history.

The shorts continue the white and red theme with Adidas’s familiar three stripes in white meeting and contrasting with their red counterparts on the shirt.

But it’s the socks which continue the club’s traditional colours of blue, black and white as Adidas celebrates its fortieth anniversary of its first appointment as Hamburger SV kit manufacturer. The traditional design is one sure to find favour with supporters.
