In their 1968/69 season, Swindon Town became the League Cup winners. It is perhaps the greatest achievement in the club’s lengthy past, stretching back to 1879. The club finished their 2017/18 season in 9th place, behind Mansfield. So, while the club are going into their 2018/19 season looking for promotion their latest home kit is full of past recognition, as well as stylish simplicity.
While the audience that have seen the release remain a little under-awed, it certainly does everything that it sets out to do. We at UK Soccer Shop love a red kit and we think designers Puma have done plenty right.
Down the front of the kit top, running in medium-sized vertical lines is a darker shade of red. It gives the kit almost all of its character, aside from the tapering and practical, breathable technology.
It might be worth mentioning here how Swindon Town came to win the League Cup. It was the third League Cup final to be played at Wembley Stadium and over 98,000 people were in attendance. The final came down to Arsenal against Swindon. It was thought that Swindon would be the underdogs but with eight Gunners’ players down with the flu, Swindon cruised to a 3-1 victory. A title that is rightly celebrated with this latest kit.
Around the neckline and along the bottom of the sleeves is a white tapering. This and the seemingly inviting sponsorship phrase “Imagine Cruising” across the front of the chest are the only two added characteristics – on top of the deep red colouring and the patch on the front that recognises the League Cup Win.
We hope to see Swindon Town FC pushing for promotion next season. With a little help from the latest home kit, 2018/19 might just be the season that resets the success clock. Perhaps in 50 years the club will produce a kit commemorating the 2018/19 season. Who knows.
